The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) Bauchi zone has reaffirmed its intention to reject student loans.

In order to help students pay for their study, grants were chosen.

ASUU’s zonal coordinator for Bauchi, Associate Professor Lazarus Maigoro, made this revelation on Saturday.

According to Maigoro, the ASUU Bauchi zone was gathering data on pupils who might probably leave school at the conclusion of the current term.

He said that this was done in the hopes of forcing the government to reconsider its choice to issue loans and switch to grants.

He said, “The question is: Who will pay the loan? What is the fate of those who cannot access it?

“The psychological trauma the students will be subjected to due to the loan while still in their studies will affect their performances negatively.

“The thought that they would graduate with a loan of N4million and above without the capacity to pay back is another psychological torture on them.”

Comrade Ibrahim Inuwa, the chairperson of the ATBU branch, had earlier promised in his welcome address that ASUU will continue to operate as a socially conscious union by defending the interest of high-quality tertiary education as a group.
