The Traditional Ruler of Nnewi, His Royal Highness, Igwe Dr. Kenneth O. Orizu (III), has revealed that Nnewi was at best a hub of a few hawkers at the present post office area with one petrol station, when he was coronated the traditional ruler in 1963.

The traditional ruler made this statement while delivering his speech during his 60th Ofala festival and 98th birthday on Thursday, 28th December, 2023.

According to Igwe Nnewi, when he assumed office as the Traditional Ruler of the town, Nnewi was not only hub of a few hawkers at the present post office area with one petrol station, but also, the town had only one tarred road from Onitsha to Owerri, and also had four secondary schools.

He said that under his watch, Nnewi developed to its present day with majority of the roads paved and tarred by philanthropic Nnewi businessmen, but the government came later.

Speaking further, he said that Agbo Edo (Nkwo Nnewi) market is a product of community development extraordinary as it was established without government intervention.
