Peter Obi Calls for National Unity As He Sympathizes with Victims of Ibadan Explosion

Peter Obi has sent his condolences to the families of those killed in Tuesday night’s explosion in Oyo State’s capital, Ibadan.

The National Emergency Management Agency said that the incident, which was allegedly brought on by explosives used in illicit mining, left three persons dead and 77 injured.

In the city’s Bodija neighbourhood, the explosion also caused damage to more than 20 buildings.

On his social media platform, X, on Wednesday, Obi—a candidate for president in the general elections of 2023—posted a statement expressing his condolences to the victims of the regrettable occurrence.

“My heart goes out to all families affected by the explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, yesterday. The explosion rocked some parts of the city on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Unfortunately, precious lives were lost, and many of our brothers and sisters were injured in the tragic incident,” he wrote.

“While commiserating with the government and people of Oyo State over this sad incident, I thank them for their swift response to the situation, which has so far restored order in the area,” he added.

In addition, he expressed gratitude to the first-aid personnel for their efforts in finding and rescuing the victims.

He conveyed his optimism that the state government’s inquiry will identify the incident’s root cause and stop similar incidents in the future.

“Thankfully, the government of Oyo State has announced a wide-scale investigation into the incident. Hopefully, we will unravel the cause of the incident and forestall future occurrences,” he said.

In addition, Obi urged Nigerians to pray for their country, uphold the law, and cooperate to create a better nation—especially in light of the numerous difficulties the country is currently facing.

He prayed that God would heal the land, give the dead eternal rest, and speedy healing to the injured.
