Senate, Security Chief’s Meeting Stall Over Absence of Ribadu, CDS Musa

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, were not present for the much-publicized discussion between the Senate and security leaders on the nation’s growing level of insecurity on Wednesday.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director General, Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, were among those who attended the Senate briefing.

The heads of security agencies and Service Chiefs were called before the Senate for questioning during a plenary session on Tuesday of last week, following the adoption of a resolution derived from a collective motion on insecurity.

The scheduled interaction was set for this Wednesday and Thursday of this week, as stated by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, on Tuesday.

However, the Senate declared in plenary on Wednesday that Ribadu and General Musa’s absence prevented the interface from taking place.

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate’s president, made the announcement and stated that although Ribadu had apologised while he was away, both he and the chief of staff of the armed forces needed to be there for the crucial meeting.

He continued by saying that the Senate has decided to include more chiefs of security in the scheduled interface session, in addition to Ribadu and General Musa.

The following people are scheduled to attend the meeting, which has been rescheduled for Tuesday of next week: Minister of Interior Hon. Olawale Edun; Minister of Finance Olawale Edun; Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of State for Police Affairs Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar.

The Senate President congratulated the available Service Chiefs for accepting the Red Chamber’s invitation during his general remarks.

He said: “We thank you all for honouring our invitation for the very important interface on the way out of the lingering security crisis at hand. However, due to the absence of the NSA and the Chief of Defence Staff, the interactive session will no longer hold today.

“Besides, the Senate in its wisdom, has decided to add other public officers whose offices are connected to security matters, to be part of the interactive session.

“Clerk of the Senate has been directed to write them ahead of Tuesday next week, now fixed for the session.
