Before the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), begins, a group of heavily armed agents from the Department of State Services (DSS) has been stationed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

After Kanu was found not guilty and released from custody by the Court of Appeal in October 2022, the case’s proceedings were previously put on hold.

The appeal court also declared that Kanu’s kidnapping from Kenya to Nigeria was unconstitutional and unlawful, which nullified the Federal Government’s terrorism-related accusations against him.

Nonetheless, the Nigerian government appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court. The supreme court issued its decision on December 15, 2023, directing the reopening of Kanu’s terrorism prosecution.

It’s important to remember that Kanu was extradited from Kenya to Nigeria and has been detained by the DSS since June 2021.
