FC Barcelona has officially appointed Hansi Flick as their new head coach, succeeding Xavi following the club’s decision to part ways with the former captain at the season’s end.
In an official statement, the club announced, “FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become men’s first team football coach until 30 June 2026.” Flick signed his contract at the club’s offices, accompanied by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
Flick, renowned for leading Bayern Munich to a historic sextuple in 2020, became the first coach to be dismissed by the German national team in September 2023 after a series of poor results. The 59-year-old had been seen watching Barcelona matches from the presidential box this season and was linked to the coaching position after Xavi announced in January that he would leave at the end of the campaign.

Although Barcelona and Xavi initially agreed in April that he would stay for the next season, Laporta ultimately changed his mind and dismissed the former midfield great last week. Following his final match in charge against Sevilla in La Liga, Xavi warned his successor, “It won’t be easy at all — they will suffer and they will need patience because it’s a really difficult job. The only thing that can save them is winning, whether they have been part of the club or not.”
Barcelona finished second in La Liga this season and were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain. Spanish media reported that Laporta was particularly upset by Xavi’s comments earlier in May regarding the economic challenges Barcelona faced compared to Spanish champions Real Madrid and other European elite clubs.
