The former national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee,” will once again be played thanks to Bola Tinubu’s adoption of the National Anthem Bill 2024.
This was revealed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at a combined National Assembly session honouring the 4th Republic of Nigeria’s Silver Jubilee.
Akpabio explained that the main goal of the event is to present the new national anthem. He also mentioned that Tinubu would not be speaking because he had to leave for the opening of the Abuja metro line.
Senate Passes Bill to Restore ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’ as National Anthem
The bill to change the national anthem from “Arise, O Compatriots” to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was previously approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives during different sessions.
The song “Arise, O Compatriots” has been replaced by the older tune “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was written on October 1, 1960, the day Nigeria attained independence.
The song “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams, who resided in Nigeria during the country’s independence, while Frances Berda handled the musical arrangements.
