The Ebonyi State Government revealed on Wednesday that N17.3 billion had been expended on repairing the runway at Abakaliki’s Chuba Okadigbo International Airport.

At the celebration of his first year in office, Governor Francis Nwifuru made this announcement.

According to Governor Nwifuru, his administration paid airport employees five months’ worth of salary arrears after taking office.

He verified that major repairs on the terminal building and control tower are well underway, and that the runway’s corrective work is now finished, paving the path for the airport to reopen for full flight operations.

The governor stated, “The remedial work at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport runway has been completed. N17.3 billion was spent, while major repairs in the terminal building and control tower have commenced in earnest and in advanced stages. To this end, flight operations will commence fully at the airport.”

Apart from the refurbishments at the airport, Governor Nwifuru emphasised the administration’s endeavours to improve the state’s security framework in the last twelve months, acknowledging the critical function of security in the efficient execution of official plans and initiatives.

The governor also announced the completion of a number of road improvements designed to stimulate rural economies by making it easier for agro-allied goods to be transported to cities.

“This is further to our determination to grow our rural economies by ensuring agro-allied products are transported to the urban centres,” he added.
