The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for 2023, Peter Obi, has voiced his extreme sadness and indignation over the horrific attack on soldiers in Abia State. Five soldiers were killed in yesterday’s ambush, which brought attention to Nigeria’s continuous problems with insecurity and violence.
Obi expressed his sympathies to the families of the dead troops as well as to Dr. Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, in a moving statement that was shared on his official Twitter account. He described the attack as a “dastardly act” and underlined the importance of justice and accountability.
“My heart goes out in solidarity and sincere condolences to my dear brother, Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, and the good people of the state,” Obi said. “More directly, my condolences to the families of the fallen heroes, who have paid the ultimate price in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we owe it to them to demand accountability and justice.”
Obi denounced the country for failing to safeguard its citizens and security officers, calling it an obvious dereliction of duty. He emphasised how urgent it is to take action against the killings and violence that continue to jeopardise the stability of the nation.
“Our failure as a nation to protect our citizens and security personnel is a clear dereliction of duty and sign of deficiency of the Nigerian state. The continued brutality and bloodshed in our nation must be met with swift and decisive action, not empty words and hollow promises,” Obi stated.
In order to find and punish the perpetrators of the crime, he demanded a speedy and comprehensive inquiry. Obi pushed on the government to act decisively to protect civilians and law enforcement personnel.

“I condemn this atrocity in strong terms, and demand an immediate and thorough investigation into this crime in order to identify and punish the culprits. We must not stand idly by while our nation is torn apart by violence and fear,” he demanded.
Additionally, the former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his dedication to fighting for a safer future for all Nigerians. He underlined the need of ongoing efforts to safeguard and appreciate the lives of both security personnel and civilians.
“We will continue to push for a better future, where our citizens and security forces are protected and valued,” Obi concluded.
