Week 35 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) saw the highly anticipated game between Rangers and Enyimba called off due to a contentious late penalty call that favoured the Flying Antelopes.

The contest, known as the Oriental Derby, was an important championship match. Rangers had sixty points, while Enyimba was right behind them, behind them by just two points. For this hotly contested game, fans poured into the stadium.

The referee gave Rangers a penalty in the 101st minute with the score tied at zero, which incited complaints from the Enyimba players.

Even when play was attempted to resume, several home fans flooded the pitch, causing confusion and disruptions to the game.

The NPFL addressed the incident on their X platform: “Rangers 0-0 Enyimba #RANENY #NPFL24 #TheFinalStretch. Match interrupted after a penalty awarded to Rangers in added time.”
