Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima, and nine other officials lost their lives in a plane crash on Monday, June 10, 2024. The military aircraft, which had been traveling within Malawi, disappeared from airport radars during the morning hours, amidst poor weather conditions. The wreckage was discovered on Tuesday, confirming the absence of any survivors.
This heartbreaking incident has prompted a wave of condolences from leaders and organizations across the continent. President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria extended his deepest sympathies to Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera and the people of Malawi. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the loss and assured Malawi of Nigeria’s support during this mourning period. He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

Similarly, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, conveyed his deep sadness over the incident. He reiterated the African Union’s solidarity with President Chakwera and the nation during this time of great loss.
Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group, also expressed his grief over the death of Vice President Chilima. In a message posted on his social media account, Adesina mourned the loss of his “brother” and the nine others who perished. He offered prayers for comfort to President Chakwera and the families affected, wishing for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
