Vice President Kamala Harris is narrowly leading former President Donald Trump in a recent national presidential poll, one of the first since President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday, Harris leads Trump by a slim margin, securing 44 percent of the vote compared to Trump’s 42 percent. This poll was conducted in the two days following Biden’s Sunday announcement that he would not seek reelection and instead endorsed his vice president. The previous week’s poll showed Harris and Trump tied at 44 percent each.

Harris, 59, is now the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, gathering endorsements, donations, and pledged delegates. However, she trails Trump, 78, in another poll released the same day. Both poll results are within their margins of error.

These new surveys were conducted following the Republican National Convention, where Trump officially accepted his party’s nomination, and Biden’s exit from the race. Harris’s performance in the polls demonstrates her ability to counteract the typical post-convention bounce candidates usually receive.

A PBS News/NPR/Marist poll conducted on Monday shows Trump slightly ahead of Harris, with 46 percent of registered voters compared to Harris’s 45 percent. Nine percent of voters remain undecided. When third-party candidates are included, Trump and Harris are tied at 42 percent each, with other candidates trailing significantly.

The PBS News survey also found that 87 percent of Americans believe Biden made the right decision by stepping down, a sentiment shared across party and generational lines. Additionally, 41 percent of respondents think Biden’s decision improves Democrats’ chances of winning in November, while 24 percent believe it decreases their odds, and 34 percent feel it makes no difference.

These polls follow a dramatic incident where Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13. Despite this, Trump holds a narrow 1.6 percentage point lead over Harris, according to an average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics.
