Fuel marketers in Kano State have increased the price of petrol, with a litre now selling for between N900 and N950. This sharp rise in fuel prices has led to a corresponding 100 percent hike in fares for commercial tricycle operators across the metropolitan local government areas.
This development follows closely after the nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria# protest. The situation in Kano has become dire, as many filling stations in the city have shut down operations, while the few that remain open are swamped with long queues of vehicles.
Prior to the recent anti-hunger protest, fuel prices at these stations had already climbed from between N780 and N850 per litre. Now, they have surged further to the N900-N950 range. Meanwhile, black market sellers have re-emerged, capitalizing on the scarcity. They are selling fuel at even higher rates, with prices ranging from N1,100 to N1,200 per litre, depending on the location.
Motorists in Kano have expressed deep concern over the escalating prices, which are straining their finances. Attempts to reach the state Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Gana Girge, for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone calls went unanswered.
