Maria Branyas Morera, recognized as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 117. Born in the United States and having lived through two world wars, Branyas spent her last 20 years in the Santa Maria del Tura nursing home in Olot, northeastern Spain.
Her family shared the news of her peaceful passing on social network X, stating, “Maria Branyas has left us. She died as she wished: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain.” They also fondly remembered her for her wisdom and kindness.
Just a day before her passing, Branyas expressed a sense of acceptance about her condition in a post managed by her family, saying, “The time is near. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears. And above all, don’t suffer for me. Wherever I go, I will be happy.”
Maria Branyas was officially recognized as the world’s oldest living person by Guinness World Records in January 2023, following the passing of French nun Lucile Randon at age 118.
With Branyas’s passing, the title of the world’s oldest living person now goes to Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who was born on May 23, 1908, and is currently 116 years old, according to the U.S. Gerontology Research Group.
