UPDATE: Afiaolu Nnewi Kicks Off In High Voltage (Photos)

The bustling town of Nnewi in Anambra State came alive yesterday as the much-anticipated Afiaolu Festival began with a vibrant opening ceremony. Known as a cultural hallmark for the Nnewi people, this year’s event did not disappoint, offering a spectacular display of traditional wrestling and dancing competitions.

The ceremony, which drew a large crowd from within and beyond the community, began with a colorful parade showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Nnewi. Local dignitaries, Igwe Nnewi, H.R.H Igwe Kenneth Orizu who was ably reprented by his son, the crown prince of Nnewi, Crown-Prince Obianofo Orizu, the three Obi’s that make up the Nnewi community, Obi Uruagu, Obi Afam Obi, Obi of Umudim, Obi Benneth Okafor, Obi Nnewichi, Obi George Onyekaba, other local chiefs, community leaders, President Generals, market leaders and guests of honor were in attendance, adding to the grandeur of the event.

The highlight of the day was the traditional wrestling competition, a beloved feature of the Afiaolu Festival. Young men from the four quarters of Nnewi displayed their strength and agility, engaging in fierce but friendly contests that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The wrestling matches, accompanied by drumming and chanting, evoked a deep sense of pride in the traditional sport that has been passed down through generations. Umudim was matched with Otolo and Umudim came out victorious while Uruagu defeated Nnewichi to face off with Umudim in the final on Saturday, 31st of August 2023.

Following the wrestling matches, the event transitioned into an energetic dance competition. Different Nnewi communities adorned in traditional attire took to the stage, performing intricate dances that reflected the cultural diversity of the Nnewi people. The dances, characterized by synchronized movements and vibrant costumes, were a testament to the enduring traditions of the Nnewi community.

To encourage participants, the community that wins the competition will go home with One Million Naira (₦1,000,000), while the first runner-up will be given Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦750,000). For the second runner-up, the cash prize is Five Hundred Thousand Naira (₦500,000), while the consolation prize is Three Hundred Thousand Naira (₦300,000). The competition is sponsored by Dr. Kingsley Chukwukeme, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of Nwaguatahihia Motors Limited, United State of America.

Speaking to one of the community leader who expressed his joy at the success of the opening ceremony. “The Afiaolu Festival is not just a celebration; it is a reminder of who we are as a people. The wrestling and dancing competitions are more than just entertainment—they are a way to preserve our culture and pass it on to the next generation.”

The event saw many technocrats in their different fields grace the event, Igwe Nnewi, HRH Igwe KON Orizu represented by his son, Crown-prince Obianefo Orizu, Obi Uruagu, Obi Umudim, Obi Nnewichi, Member representing Nnewi North Constituency at the State Assembly, Hon Augustine Ikeh, Makuochukwu Okoli (Organizer Oil and Gas), the chief medical director (CMD) Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Prof, Dr. Joseph Ugboaja (CON), RTN Chikwado Ejimbe PHF. (CEO Chidovaz Global Links LTD), Ichie Kenneth Maduako, President General Nzuko-ora Nnewi, Dr. Maduka Atueyi CCEE, SEIPN, JP and many others.

The Afiaolu committee Hon. Prince Jude Osumuo FCAI, JP were, however, commended for the planning and execution of the 2024 Afiaolu Nnewi cultural festival. This was revealed by the Obi of Nnewichi, Obi George Onyekaba during his adulation on the kola.

The Afiaolu Nnewi Festival will continue over the next few days, featuring various cultural activities, including masquerade displays, traditional music performances, and a grand finale that promises to be as spectacular as the opening ceremony on Saturday, the 31st of August 2024.
