Just two days after revealing that the burden of petrol pricing had pushed it into over $6 billion in debt, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited has increased the pump price of fuel from N617 per litre to N897 per litre. This significant hike, amounting to over a 45% increase, took effect on Tuesday morning.

Checks at NNPC Retail stations in Abuja confirmed the new fuel price, reflecting the sharp increase. However, when contacted by the press, the company’s Chief Communications Officer, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, expressed surprise at the news. “I’m not aware of this. Thank you for reaching out. I have no comment on the matter at this time,” he responded via WhatsApp, adding that any updates would be communicated promptly.

Earlier in the day, an unconfirmed message circulated on social media hinted at the price hike. The message stated: “Good morning all. This is to inform you that NNPC Retail Management has approved an upward review of PMS pump price from N617/litre to N897/litre effective today, 3rd September 2024. Please, ensure all your pumps and totems (price boards)/MIDs reflect the new PMS price of N897/litre. Thank you.”
