In a surprising twist, the new electoral law has mandated the Young Progressive Party (YPP) to present a new candidate to replace the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah for the upcoming by-election in Anambra South senatorial district. Section 28, subsection 4 of the new electoral law states that there shall be no substitution of candidates in a by-election, except in the unfortunate event of the death of a candidate. The implication of this is that it is only candidates who contested in the last election are mandated by law to recontest in the upcoming Anambra South Senatorial by-election, except the party of the deceased candidate who is expected to submit the name of a fresh candidate for a by-election.
While different political parties have been gearing up to field candidates for the by-election, they are now faced with the reality that they can only contest the election if they were candidates in the previous election. As a result, three candidates have emerged from the parties that contested in the previous election. These candidates include Chris Azubogu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Obinna Uzor of the Labour Party, Chris Uba of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Chief Chukwuma Umeorji of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Many are curious to see who the YPP will put forward as their substitute candidate, as the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s shoes will undoubtedly be tough to fill.
Furthermore, this new regulation has paved the way for an intense political battle among the remaining candidates, as they strive to convince voters of their suitability and capability to represent the interests of the senatorial district effectively.
As the by-election draws nearer, all eyes will be on the YPP as they scramble to select a fitting replacement for the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while the other candidates gear up for a rigorous electoral campaign to secure victory in the upcoming polls.
