Nollywood has been struck by sadness as Shina Sanyaolu, a highly respected filmmaker and director in the Yoruba genre, has passed away. The news of his death was confirmed by Bolaji Amusan, President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), through an Instagram post on Wednesday. Amusan simply wrote, “Sleep well uncle Shina Sanyaolu,” without revealing the cause or exact date of his death.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends in the entertainment industry, reflecting on Sanyaolu’s positive impact on their lives and the Nigerian film industry. Veteran actor Jide Kosoko took to Instagram to share his heartfelt memories of Sanyaolu, describing him as more than just a filmmaker but a kind and generous man who touched many lives.

“Shina Sanyaolu was not just a remarkable man, he was a beacon of kindness and warmth to all who knew him,” Kosoko wrote. “His love for the arts and his unwavering support for our industry were unmatched. Shina was always there for us, offering help and opening doors where none existed. He was a rare gem, and the world feels emptier without him.”

Kosoko also fondly recalled how Sanyaolu welcomed fellow Nigerian entertainers when they traveled to the UK in the 1980s, offering them shelter and support despite his busy life.

Doyin Amodu, the UK president of TAMPAN, also paid tribute, highlighting Sanyaolu’s dedication to the arts. “Your love for the arts and unwavering support for the industry were unmatched. Good night, my brother and director. You will be deeply missed,” she wrote.
