Following a fatal road accident on the Sagamu-Benin expressway, Akinwumi Fasaki, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called on motorists to prioritize rest before long trips. The commander, in a statement issued by FRSC spokesperson Florence Okpe, stressed that drivers should take breaks lasting between 15 and 30 minutes after every four hours of driving to prevent fatigue-related crashes.
This reminder comes after a tragic incident on Monday that resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to eight others. The accident occurred around 2 p.m. at RCC in Ogbere and involved a white Toyota Hiace bus. Okpe confirmed that the crash happened when the driver, fatigued, lost control of the vehicle. The bus collided with a road divider, flipped over, and burst into flames.
The accident involved 18 individuals—eight men and ten women. Among them, four men and four women sustained injuries, while one man and three women died. The injured were rushed to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, where the deceased were also taken to the morgue.
The FRSC reiterated the need for drivers to take necessary rest breaks during long journeys to prevent similar tragedies.
