During the stakeholders’ meeting called by the election umpire on Tuesday, there was a small drama at the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission’s (ABSIEC) offices in Umuahia. Two individuals identified themselves as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)’s Abia State Chairman.

The APGA’s chosen chairman, Sunday Onukwubiri, was the first to declare his attendance.

When discussing the Abia State local government elections on November 2, Onukwubiri referred to himself as the “one and only Chairman of APGA in Abia State.”

Onukwubiri warned Professor George Chima, the Chairman of ABSIEC, that his academic reputation could be ruined if a credible local government poll in Abia is not held.

However, when Onuoha Egbe, the APGA’s factional state chairman, stood up and declared himself the “authentic” chairman of the party in Abia, the ABSIEC offices came under attack.

Enraged by Onukwubiri’s claim to be the “one and only Chairman of APGA,” Egbe warned the ABSIEC not to acknowledge anyone who is not a member of the national leadership led by Edozie Njoku.

Egbe said that Edozie Njoku was declared by the Supreme Court to be the legitimate National Chairman of the APGA and that anyone else leading the party in Abia should not be acknowledged.

In response, however, ABSIEC Chairman Professor George Chima stated that his office called the stakeholders’ meeting to announce the election schedule rather than to resolve disputes within political parties.
