In a significant political development, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has rejected Hon. Okey Offor’s candidacy as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) flagbearer for the Nnewi North Local Government chairmanship election. The election, scheduled for September 28, 2024, marks the first local government poll in Anambra State in a decade.
Okey Offor’s nomination faced strong opposition from key APGA members within Nnewi North, who questioned his allegiance to the party. Critics argue that Offor is still affiliated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after publicly tearing his APGA membership card and leading a PDP campaign in the area during the 2023 elections. His official return to APGA remains in dispute, leading to further resistance from local party members.
Nnewi Needs A Chairman With Sound Educational Background – Okey Offor
Despite support from influential figures like Dennis Ikegwuonu, a prominent community leader who endorsed Offor after withdrawing from the race, many APGA members feel that Offor lacks the necessary electoral credibility and removed from participating in the primaries.
However, Hon Echezona Anazodo(Eche Homes) who emerged victorious in the popular APGA primary election and was given the party ticket for the September 28th local government polls is someone who is widely accepted by the people of Nnewi and is on cusp for victory at the polls.
As the election date draws closer, the rejection of Offor’s candidacy has intensified discussions on party loyalty and strategy, leaving many observers to wonder how APGA will resolve its internal conflicts ahead of the local government polls.
