Political players and concerned Nigerians are currently anxious as the Senate begins the assessment of the 28 cabinet nominees forwarded to it by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week.
According to media reports, President Tinubu delivered the much-anticipated ministerial nominee list to Senate President Godswill Akpabio last week Thursday through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
President Tinubu issued the list on Thursday, beating the constitutional deadline of July 28 by 60 days.
UPDATE: National Assembly Unveils Bola Tinubu’s Ministerial List Today
Despite the fact that the Nigerian president stated in his letter to the Senate that a supplementary list of ministry nominations should be expected.
Nominees for various portfolios are typically chosen from throughout the federation’s states.
However, the list previously provided to the Senate for vetting was believed to be taken from only 25 states, and included four former governors, six former federal legislators, two former legislators, three serving presidential advisers, and seven women, among others.
The federal government had urged the nominees to complete their paperwork at the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President at the National Assembly complex between Friday and Monday (today) in order for them to participate in the screening.
UPDATE: Kenneth Okonkwo Reacts to Tinubu’s Ministerial List
The Nigerian Senate, for its part, has promised a transparent process for evaluating ministerial nominees.
Speaking to journalists earlier, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu boasted that Nigerians would not be dissatisfied with how the screening would be conducted.
“This time, the screening will be very thorough. It is not going to be a situation where the screening will be anyhow. We are going to know the background of the nominees, and we are not going to disappoint Nigerians. It is not going to be a shallow screening. You must have character; you must have the face; you must have the behaviour to be among the cabin crew to fly Nigeria. This time around, Nigeria is going to be better,” Adaramodu said.
The screening, for which the Senate relocated its annual recess, is expected to take at least three days.
The 109-member Senate is scheduled to question the nominees on the value they will bring to governance if confirmed.
