Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), is scheduled to meet with the Senate today to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills.
The bills have faced significant controversy, particularly from Northern stakeholders. In response, President Tinubu directed the AGF to collaborate with the National Assembly to address these concerns.
The Senate formed a special committee, led by Senator Abba Moro, to work with the AGF on refining the bills. However, progress was delayed due to adjustments in the committee’s membership and internal Senate meetings.
A source from the Ministry of Justice confirmed that the AGF would attend the meeting at the National Assembly today. Senator Moro also confirmed that both the AGF and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, have been invited to the session.
The Senate’s special committee includes Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), Titus Zam (APC, Benue South), Abdullahi Yahaya (PDP, Kebbi North), Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), and Kaka Shehu, SAN, (APC, Borno Central), who has since declined membership.
This meeting aims to resolve contentious aspects of the Tax Reform Bills and achieve a consensus on the proposed tax reforms.
