Human rights advocate Aisha Yesufu has stated that she believes all citizens have the right to demonstrate over any problem, and that no one has the authority to dictate to today’s young how to conduct their planned protest.
Aisha’s rant is in response to a post made on Wednesday on his X handle by Nigerian journalist Dele Momodu. “I have 46 years of experience in protests, starting at the University of Ife in 1978,” he wrote. Nothing puts a country at greater risk than protests being led by a mob or by nameless individuals.
“It is the right of everyone to protest but not the right of anyone to cause mayhem… And government has the right to protect lives and properties.”

Aisha Yesufu, on the other hand, took to her X handle on Thursday and said, “Nobody has monopoly of protest and nobody has to be the face of a protest.” It was clear that she wasn’t happy with his comment.
“Every citizen whether known or unknown has the right to protest and whatever issue they feel aggrieved about.
“Anyone who has protested in Nigeria knows that it is the Nigerian government that unleashes violence on peaceful protesters.
She continued, “Your 1978 is another person’s 2024. You have done yours, let them do theirs.

“I am part of the older generation and I do not think we have any moral justification to tell the youth of today how to protest.
” If the protests we did worked, will they need to still be on the streets demanding for good governance?,”she queried.
