We can report that Okonjo-Iweala’s brother and Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, HRM Obi Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, and his convoy survived cultists’ attack during their visit to Otulu Ogwashiku-Uku, in Delta State where he went to offer prayers.
During the attack that happened on Friday, 17th September 2021, one of the cultists who attempted to grab a gun from one of the security detail attached to the traditional ruler sustained an injury.
According to a statement released from the Obi’s palace, the traditional leader, his entourage which included Prince Onyema Okonjo and the Council of Ogwashi-Uku, visited the community to offer prayers and had several discussions on how to progress.
The event was largely successful as the Obi met members of the community and prayed with them.
However, when the Obi was departing, cultists and thugs who were reportedly brought from Otulu attacked him and members of the entourage. The Obi was at the rear of the convoy when the attack happened.
“The thugs attempted to forcefully seize a gun belonging to a law enforcement operative who escorted the Obi on the visit.

“It is important to note that members of the press accompanied the Obi on the visit. The law enforcement from the Office of the Area Commander and also the Brigade Command in Asaba were also there at the visit and they witnessed everything that happened,” part of the statement from the palace reads.
The Palace also said that those who sponsored the thugs are known and will be brought to justice.
Speaking exclusively to newsmen, Prince Onyema Okonjo confirmed being at the rear of the convoy when the attack occurred.
“I was at the rear. They attacked me. Part of the entourage had already gone. The cultists were led by Chris Oduwanor the brother to Francis Oduwanor who is already facing charges for illegal possession of firearms who were on the scene and coordinated the attacks.
“They tried to seize one of the weapons of the Army official, during which one of them got hurt. But the visit was largely peaceful. It was just a traditional visit to one of the communities which had been largely overrun by cultists and miscreants. There were some sponsored thugs, who tried to attack the members at the rear of the convoy of the Obi’s team that came on the visit,” he narrated.
