A bill to create a new state in southeast Nigeria has progressed in the House of Representatives.
A bill creating Orlu State was approved on Thursday by the lower house legislature during its first reading.
A second reading of the proposed legislation has been scheduled, with more sponsors including Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, the representative of Ideato North South Federal Constituency of Imo State.
The proposed bill argues that the establishment of Orlu State will modify the 1999 Constitution, bringing the total number of states in Nigeria to 37.

The states of Imo, Abia, and Anambra will be combined to form the new state, which will have Orlu as its capital.
A new paragraph listing 28 local government areas—Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu, Oguta, Ohaji Egbema, Onuimo, Ihiala, Uga, Ihiala, Uli, Ozubulu, Akokwa, Arondizuogu, Umuchu, Umunze, Umuaku, New Ideato North, Nwabosi West, Nwabosi East, Owerre Nkworji, Alaoma, Amaifeke, and Owerrebiri Umuowa are among the 28 local government areas proposed by the bill in the 1999 Constitution.
The bill’s primary sponsor, Hon. Ugochinyere, pleaded with other members of the National Assembly to back it in order to guarantee a second reading.
He made it clear that Ideato would become a senatorial district at the establishment of Orlu State.
It is notable that, with the exception of the southeast, which has five states, every geopolitical zone in Nigeria contains at least six states.
