The Sopurum Hotel in the Nkwelle neighborhood of the commercial metropolis of Onitsha, Anambra State, was completely destroyed by fire, consuming a sizable portion of the building.
Although the fire’s origin is yet unknown, it is believed to have started on Monday about 4:30 am.
At the time this report was sent, firefighters from the states of Anambra and Delta had already arrived on the scene to deal with the emergency.
Martins Agbili, the Anambra State Fire Chief, could not be reached for comment right away since he did not answer calls or texts to his phone number.

But the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the fire incident, saying that the situation is under control.
“The situation is under control. The fire started around 4:30 am on Monday and when we got the information, our men were quickly mobilised to the scene and they condoned off the area to avoid any case of vandalism.
“No loss of life and the men of the fire service are on the ground controlling the situation and managing the fire,” Ikenga added.
