The House of Representatives has pledged to donate 50% of their salaries for six months to address the hunger crisis in the country. This decision was made during a plenary session on Thursday, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu proposed the salary sacrifice, urging his colleagues to contribute half of their monthly earnings to a collective fund. Kalu emphasized the need for immediate action, noting, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.”
Kalu highlighted that each member’s monthly salary is N600,000, and by giving up 50%, each would contribute N300,000 monthly. This collective effort will generate N108 million monthly and a total of N648 million over six months, which will be directed towards alleviating hunger across the nation.
