Femi Adesina, the former special adviser on media and publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has lauded his former boss as a steadfast advocate for the ordinary Nigerian. In a heartfelt tribute marking Buhari’s 82nd birthday on Tuesday, Adesina emphasized that the former President’s policies consistently prioritized the well-being of the masses.
Highlighting one of Buhari’s most debated policy decisions, Adesina noted that Buhari’s refusal to remove fuel subsidies during his tenure as Nigeria’s leader demonstrated his commitment to shielding citizens from economic hardship. He described Buhari as ‘Ore Mekunu,’ a Yoruba term meaning “friend of the poor,” and praised him for his continued connection to the people even in retirement.
Adesina reflected on Buhari’s approach to governance, citing his reluctance to make decisions that could exacerbate poverty, even when such choices were politically or economically expedient. “The removal of fuel subsidy was the proverbial ‘elephant in the room.’ The government was aware that the subsidy was unsustainable and benefited corrupt actors. Yet, Buhari ensured it remained, prioritizing the ordinary Nigerian,” Adesina remarked.
The former aide elaborated on Buhari’s reasoning: “When oil prices soared to $100 or even $140 per barrel on the global market, what did the average Nigerian gain? Nothing. So why should they bear the burden when oil prices plummeted?” This perspective, Adesina argued, epitomized Buhari’s empathy for the plight of the common man.
Although Buhari’s administration faced significant pressures to end the subsidy, Adesina noted that the former President chose to tread cautiously to avoid destabilizing the nation. While other leaders or candidates might have championed subsidy removal, Buhari’s primary concern remained the potential impact on society.
Now nearly two years into retirement, Buhari’s enduring popularity, particularly among the masses, is evident. Adesina observed that people continue to gravitate toward him, drawn by his reputation as a leader who placed their welfare above all else.
