The Senate will draught legislation to make it essential for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit results electronically, according to Sharafadeen Alli, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Act.

Providing this guarantee, Alli stated that the election umpire is not required by the present electoral statute to send results electronically during her appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

“That is one of the things that we are going to be doing going forward. Under the current law, it is not mandatory for INEC to upload, that is what the court has said, enter the law, under the current law it is not but as we are going on forward it is going to be mandatory, that is one of the things that we are going to do,” he said.

His remarks coincide with Nigerians’ growing discontent about the poll umpire’s inability to electronically transfer results from the general election in February and March.

Anaedoonline.ng recalls that the election umpire had promised to electronically communicate election results in real-time in the 2023 election during the run-up to the 2022 election.

Political observers, however, contend that voters’ indifference in next elections will stem from INEC’s failure to honour its commitment.
