Before preparing the egusi soup, the seeds are sun-dried and ground plain or roasted/fried before being ground.
Then the chaffs obtained during the oil extraction of egusi seeds can be used for making a snack called fried cake. The seeds can also be fermented and used for making a local spice known as ogiri. Due to its high oil content, egusi seeds can be used for making margarine, butter and animal feed.
Here are the benefits of including this food in your daily diet.
1. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Melon contains anti-inflammatory properties that help treat infections and injury. A study reveals that the methanol extract of egusi significantly inhibited serotonin, carrageenan and prostaglandin which helps fight inflammation.
2. Help fights cancer
Egusi is a good herbal cure for cancer and is best for curing breast cancer. The results of a study by Grossman et al., (2007) showed that cucurbitacin glycosides possess pleiotropic effects on cells thus leading to both apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Thus cucurbitacin glycosides exhibit therapeutic effects against breast cancer cells.
3. Contains anti-arthritic properties
Kachhawah et al., (2016) investigated the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of melon fruits against anti-arthritic activity. The study aimed to develop a standardisation protocol for the anti-arthritic effects of the extract that contains cucurbitacin glycoside and quercetin.
The study proved that melon fruit hydroalcoholic extract possesses significant anti-arthritic properties. This is attributed to its rich constituent of phytochemicals such as flavonoids. As a result, it can be used for treating rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease symptomized by chronic inflammation of the joints, stiffness, swelling, pain and redness in the joints.

After existing on this planet for a good couple of decades or longer, you may not realize that you have been showering all wrong. You’ve probably got a routine that you follow whenever you step into the shower, but there are things you should never do in the shower that you should be aware of.
Life is all about learning, especially when it comes to looking after yourself and metamorphosing from a whipper-snapper to a fully-fledged adult. Even though you may still feel eighteen on the inside, you’re not getting any younger and it’s always useful to know how to do things properly. Of course, some folks are better at certain things than others, but when it comes to personal hygiene, there are certain guidelines that will benefit everyone.
Depending on your upbringing, you may or may not have had the semi-embarrassing chat about how to efficiently wash your bod with a parent or guardian. If you didn’t ever get round to this conversation — lucky you — you may have missed out on some vital snippets of info. Chances are, you’re probably bathing just fine (unless you stink to high heaven) but it doesn’t hurt to have some tips up your sleeve on things you should never do in the shower. So, I spoke with an aesthetician, a dermatologist, and a hairstylist to discover the bad bathing habits we should put a stop to pronto.

1. Use Piping Hot Water
I spoke with Stalina Glot, a Senior Aesthetician at Haven Spa NYC, about things you should never do in the shower. Glot says not to take hot showers, due to the fact that they remove too many of your natural oils.
Dr. Hadley King, dermatologist at NYC’s SKINNEY Medspa, also tells me over email, “Water that is too hot can strip the skin of its natural oils and hydration and leave the skin too dry.” Instead she recommends people to, “Use water that is warm instead of hot.”
2. Shower For Too Long
It can be more than tempting to stay in the shower for just a few extra minutes, especially when it’s cold outside. However, Glot warns that you shouldn’t shower for too long, as it can make your skin dry and itchy. Dr. King seconds this, saying, “Don’t shower more than once per day or for more than 8 minutes at a time.” As someone who adores long showers, I feel your pain, but quick showers are better for your skin.
3. Use A Scrub In The Shower Stream
IMO, it’s super frustrating when you lather up your hands with a scrub and just when you’re ready to start applying it to your bod, it washes off your hands and runs down the drain. Glot says, “Don’t use a scrub in the stream of a shower: Water runs on the face [and] body and washes [the] scrub away before anything beneficial can happen.”

4. Over-Use Loofahs
If you’re a loofah lover, you’ll want to know what Glot has to say about these unusual sponges, “They are great for exfoliating but loofahs are also loaded with germs.” Glot advises, “Don’t over use your loofahs.”
5. Put Shampoo On Partially Wet Hair
When it comes to hair care in the shower, Judy McGuinness, Senior Stylist at Mizu New York, has some helpful advice. McGuinness tells me over email, “Make sure your hair is fully drenched in water before lathering up! If your hair isn’t completely wet, the shampoo won’t lather properly, and you’ll end up using more than you need…” She elaborates, “This is especially important for sulfate-free shampoo, as there isn’t any detergent in the formula to help it foam up.”
6. Shave Your Legs On The Day Of A Pedicure
Dr. King tells me, “Don’t shave your legs when you shower on a day you are going to go for a pedicure.” She explains, “It increases the risk of infection.” If you’re a lady who likes to have silky pins, make sure you shave at least the day before your pedicure appointment, so you don’t put yourself at risk of infection.

7. Use Oily Products In The Shower
Although this may seem like common sense, it’s something you might end up doing once, then never repeating again, due to injuring yourself. Glot says, “Don’t use an oily product in the shower. It make the floor dangerously slippery.” Don’t bother with oily products if you want to avoid potential accidents, because slipping in the shower can lead to disastrous consequences.
So keep your hair and skin in tip-top condition, and stay safe in the shower with this expert advice!.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is an incredibly delicious and healthy tropical fruit. It originated in South America, where early European explorers named it after its resemblance to a pinecone.
This popular fruit is packed with nutrients, antioxidants and other helpful compounds, such as enzymes that can fight inflammation and disease.
Pineapples are low in calories but have an incredibly impressive nutrient profile. One cup (5.8 ounces or 165 grams) of pineapple chunks contains the following (2): Pineapples also contain trace amounts of vitamins A and K, phosphorus, zinc and calcium.

They are especially rich in vitamin C and manganese, providing 131% and 76% of the daily recommendations, respectively.
Vitamin C is essential for growth and development, a healthy immune system and aiding the absorption of iron from the diet.
2. Contains disease-fighting antioxidants
Not only are pineapples rich in nutrients, they are also loaded with healthy antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules that help your body combat oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress is a state in which there are too many free radicals in the body. These free radicals interact with the body’s cells and cause damage that is linked to chronic inflammation, a weakened immune system and many harmful diseases.
3. Its enzymes can ease digestion
Pineapples contain a group of digestive enzymes known as bromelain (10Trusted Source).
They function as proteases, which break down protein molecules into their building blocks, such as amino acids and small peptides.
Once protein molecules are broken down, they are more easily absorbed across the small intestine. This can be especially helpful for people with pancreatic insufficiency, a condition in which the pancreas cannot make enough digestive enzymes

4. Help reduce the risk of cancer
Cancer is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth. Its progression is commonly linked to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
Several studies have shown that pineapple and its compounds reduces the risk of cancers. This is because they minimize oxidative stress and reduce inflammation.
5. Boost immunity and suppress inflammation
Pineapples have been a part of traditional medicine for centuries.
They contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and enzymes like bromelain that collectively boost immunity and suppress inflammation.
It ease symptoms of arthritis There are many types of arthritis, but most of them involve inflammation in the joints.
Since pineapples contain bromelain, which hasanti-inflammatory properties, it’s commonly thought that they may provide pain relief for those with inflammatory arthritis
One study in patients with osteoarthritis found that taking a digestive enzyme supplement containing bromelain helped relieve pain as effectively as common arthritis medicines like diclofenac.

6. Speed recovery after surgery or strenuous exercise
Eating pineapples reduce the time it takes to recover from surgery or exercise. This is largely due to the anti-inflammatory properties of bromelain.
Several studies have shown that bromelain reduces the inflammation, swelling, bruising and pain that often occurs after surgery. It also seems to reduce markers of inflammation
Proteases like bromelain are believed to speed up the recovery of damage caused by strenuous exercise by reducing inflammation around the damaged muscle tissue
7. Delicious and easy to add to the diet
Pineapples are sweet, convenient and easy to incorporate into your diet.
They are very affordable and available year-round in many American markets, as they can be purchased fresh, canned or frozen. You can enjoy them on their own or in smoothies, salads or on homemade pizzas.
8. The bottom line
Pineapples are delicious, low in calories and loaded with nutrients and antioxidants.

Some African doctors on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, United Kingdom and the United States, enabled by technology, gathered to share ideas about best practices in saving lives while safeguarding themselves from the virus.
Some 20 doctors of African descent gathered across three continents via Zoom to discuss best practices in safeguarding health workers at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The doctors from Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon mostly working in the Diaspora discussed the need to establish hospital protocol for COVID-19 management; TELE-Medicine as an alternative to face-to-face medical practice; personal protection routine doctors should adopt to avoid getting infected; integrity of tests; and use of face masks among others.
The presence of a Nephrologist based in Bronx, New York in the group sharing how he got infected with COVID-19 underscored the gravity of risks healthcare workers face in saving the lives of others.
Coughing heavily as he spoke, the Nigerian-born doctor (name withheld) said he contracted COVID-19 as a result of an unguarded examination of an asymptomatic patient using a face mask he had used more than once.
He warned health workers to be circumspect about their protection routine.
“When I came in contact with the patient I was wearing a surgical mask, gloves, apron. I had used the face mask about two to three days. I was careful not to touch the surface. I cannot remember if I washed my face after seeing the patient; I don’t know if it contributed to how I got the infection. I want to advise doctors to prepare ahead. Work with your family as if you are already exposed.
“You can have all the PPE there is; if you are taking it off and you don’t do it appropriately, you will run into trouble. Avoid touching surfaces; wash your hands; wash your face,” he said.
All the doctors agreed there was a need to establish and follow personal protection protocol to avoid endangering their lives, families and patients.
Convener of the meeting, Dr. Ona Utuama, a hospitalist and public health researcher practising in Florida, U.S., said she had stopped wearing jewellery and personal clothes to work.
“I wear scrubs, get a long pair of socks, no jewellery, rubber shoes; I cover my hair. When I get home I ensure all my clothes come out in the garage and straight into the laundry; wash my hands and have my bath before meeting my family,” she said.
Dr. Sola Irinoye, who runs a primary care private practice in South Africa, also said he had dedicated work clothes and had prepared a part of his home for his sole use while the pandemic lasts.

Dr. Anthony Nebor, a Pulmonology and critical care, in Detroit Michigan advised doctors to limit their exposure while treating patients by going to them only when necessary as the virus spends substantial time in the air.
“Studies have shown that this virus can be in the air for up to three hours. For the dreaded Tuberculosis, it is about 30 minutes. If you don’t have adequate protection, you should not see patients,” he said.
Dr. Patricia Wodi, a Paediatrician in the UK, called for a policy that requires all patients to have face masks on when visiting the hospital. She also warned doctors not to hang around the hospital longer than necessary and limit discussion with co-workers.
“The Italians had substantial transmission among his workers. Protect yourself; be wary of patients and other health workers. Every human being is a potential carrier,” she said.
As important as using PPE, the doctors also stressed the need to wash before and after removing them. Dr. Benson Okwara, Team Lead for COVID-19 response at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), said he supervised the wearing and removal of PPE for frontline workers at the hospital.
With the global shortage of PPE being an issue, the best practice on their safe usage was discussed.
A doctor from Ghana, Gertrude Acquah-Hagan, said doctors were being told to use home-made PPE.
Dr. Irinoye said he manages his PPE supply by re-using his N-95 masks (three or four times) and suits after sterilising them in an Ultra-Violet sterilizer.
However, the doctors did not agree that sterilising PPE for re-use was good enough to protect health workers.
Dr. Utuama urged doctors to demand PPE from hospital authorities rather than manage what inadequate equipment they are given.
“Ask your hospital to provide. If you are a health worker you need the best type of protection you can get,” she said.
Nebor added: “I stand for use of PPE once and discard. I am still a bit sceptical about disinfection.”
The group generally agreed that Telemedicine was a way hospitals could use to reduce face-to-face meetings with patients.
Dr Ufuoma Okotete, an Abuja-based Physician, said TELE-Medicine was the way to go. “Sixty percent of hospital visits are not necessary,” she said.
However, Dr. Adegoke said hospitals have to work out how to bill patients for Tele-medicine which may not require the patient to be physically present at the hospital.
Dr. Utuama said she uses TELE-Medicine to attend to patients at the hospital.
“We started with using the phone; now we use an iPad to interact with the patients,” she said.
The doctors generally praised Nigeria’s management of the pandemic so far. They, however, warned that the numbers be kept under control and expressed concerns about inadequate testing. They underscored the need for proper planning and leadership.
Dr. Utuama said beyond building isolation centres, planning, and adequate testing were key to successful management of the pandemic.
“Nigeria keeps building isolation centres which are good but need those who are on the frontlines to guide them through the fine details. It’s the testing, protocols, management processes that those in hard-hit areas are doing that will help them and avoid the mistakes we made. We pray our cases don’t increase quickly,” she said.
Private hospitals in Nigeria are not allowed to manage COVID-19 cases except they are accredited. However, with some of the COVID-19 patients being asymptomatic, they are likely to spread the infection unknowingly wherever they go.
Underscoring the need to be prepared, the doctors said hospitals should have a protocol in place for managing patients even before they start getting cases.
Dr. Adeleke Adegoke, a family medicine ER Expert and hospitalist in Texas, said the plan should include the number of entry and exit points access to the hospital, to what happens should a patient CPR which is likely to generate aerosol that would further spread the virus.
“Most hospitals in the U.S. did not plan ahead of time. For folks in Nigeria, it is best to start planning now. Have a plan for what will happen if there is a surge; entry and exits to the hospital; decision to intubate; there should be protocol on everything so everyone does not just do what they like,” he said.
Dr. Cynthia Yohanna, a UK-based doctor, said her hospital has divided the ER (Emergency Room) into two and code-named them to refer to COVID and non-COVID areas. COVID areas have health workers in full PPE. Non- COVID-19 area takes precautions to prevent infection.
“We have split the practice into two – hot zone and cold zone. Once you have a cough or temperature you don’t get seen with others; you are seen in the quarantine zone,” she said.
The doctors noted other hospitals had similar arrangements and named the Quarantine area hot zone, red ER, Dirty area etc.
In Anambra State, Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Health, Dr Simeon Onyemachi said private hospitals had been directed to set up mini-isolation areas in their hospitals should they get suspected cases then escalate to the relevant government agencies to pick up such patients to isolation centres.
He said the state may get up to 7,000 cases based on its Mathematical model, adding that the government had prepared a 300-plus bed isolation centre for COVID-19 cases in the Anambra State NYSC Camp.
“We are preparing for the worst-case scenario. If we look at the modelling, we will get 7,000 people. We have built a 328-bed isolation centre in the new NYSC camp.
We set up a protocol for hospitals to follow. When they get suspected cases, they should use a part of the hospital as mini-isolation centre; the numbers to call are in the bulk SMS we sent to the hospitals,” he said.f
Regarding the use of face masks by the public, the doctors agreed that it should become a general policy.
Dr. Utuama advised Nigerians to make masks at home to reduce the cost of buying readymade ones which are presently scarce.
“We don’t have masks here; we are telling people to make. In Nigeria, let tailors make cheap face masks and give or sell to those around them. It took us five weeks to make that decision – too late. So for Nigeria, make that decision now,” she said.
After agreeing that the deliberations were fruitful, the doctors decided to make the meeting weekly to continue sharing their COVID-19 experience.

A Professor of Virology and acting Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Prof. Keme Pondei, has rubbished the conspiracy theory linking the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic to the Five Generation Network (5G).
Pondei, who spoke in Port Harcourt in his capacity as a medical expert, explained that the 5G network was expected to be an improvement on the 4G to deliver speed and faster communication.
He warned that the discussion on 5G could divert people’s attention on the devastating spread of the pandemic and called for public sensitization and enlightenment.
He also debunked the claims that the coronavirus was developed in a laboratory describing the pandemic as a combination of two different viruses, which existed in two particular groups of animals; the pangolin, a scaly animal common in China and Africa) and a particular specie of bat.
He said: “The 5G network is suppose to be like a massive improvement on the 4G network in terms of speed for delivery in which you will be able to even download 1gigabite in one minute. It means a faster communication network.

“From what the Nigeria Telecommunication Commission (NCC) has made available, 5G is not in Nigeria. They tested it for about three months. So, whatever mast is here, at worst, it is 4G and nobody has linked 4G with any virus. We know that there is some form of radiation in all those communication things. But there is no evidence that they will cause disease.
“There is no scientific evidence to link the COVID-19 pandemic and the 5G network. From the molecular/biology point of view, this novel coronavirus is called the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2.
“It is similar to the previous one called SARS. But from analysis so far, it is showing that this could be like a combination of two different viruses, which existed in two particular groups of animals; the pangolin (a scaly animal common in China and Africa) and a particular specie of bat.
“There is a lot that is still not known about COVID-19, but it is clear that it is not from genetic manipulation and it is not one lab. Even though there are all those conspiracy theories, what is available in the public domain is that it is a combination”.
On why most of the test kits failed to detect the virus, he said: “Most of the test kits will not work because it will only detect previous SARS or ordinary coronavirus infection because those tests look for antibodies instead of antigens.

“The thing about most viral infections is that as time goes on, the body’s immunity is able to overcome. A person whose immunity is not compromised will overcome the virus. But where a person has an underlying illness; hypertension, diabetes, asthma and others hardly survive it. You find out that most of the people who had died of COVID-19 are people who had these illnesses”.
Ponder called for a compulsory health insurance scheme in the country to help in rescuing the health system in the country.
He said: “Health insurance is the key to universal health coverage. It is the desire of everybody, but health insurance cannot be voluntary; in all the places where this has worked, it is mandatory. The UK that has the National Health Insurance, as far as you work, you contribute to health insurance.
“In Nigeria, it has been very difficult; we have the NHIS (National Health Insurance Scheme), but it has only been able to cover five percent of the population. Different states have health insurance schemes; I am on the board of Bayelsa State Health Insurance Scheme and I know what it took us to start it just because it was made compulsory.”

A global condom shortage is looming as the coronavirus pandemic disrupts production and supply chains of the world’s top maker of contraceptives.
Most countries are on lockdown as over half of humanity has been confined to their homes as the highly contagious virus ravages the world.
Some businesses deemed non-essential have also been closed down.
Malaysia, one of the world’s top rubber producers and a major source of condoms in March imposed a nationwide lockdown.
Malaysian contraceptive giant is expected to produce 200 million fewer condoms than usual with the restrictions on its operations
Chief executive, karex, Goh Miah Kiat has warned that supplies of contraceptives will be hit hard with disruption in supply and transport difficulties.

He expressed worries about the supplies of condoms to developing countries.
Kiat warned that with other producers around the world likely facing disruption in getting condoms to market due to transport problems, supplies of contraceptives will be hit hard.
“The world will definitely see a condom shortage.
“It’s challenging, but we are trying our best right now to do whatever we can. It is definitely a major concern because condoms are an essential medical device.
“While we are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, there are also other serious issues that we need to look at,” he added.
Anaedoonline reported that a consultant psychiatrist at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Kaduna, Omeiza Beida has offered reasons why many Nigerians defy the stay-at-home directive and social distancing advice to prevent spread of Coronavirus.
Beida, who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday, said most Nigerians do not believe in the pandemic.
The psychiatrist said Nigerians believe more in metaphysics and religion than in science.
“Our community has just been programmed to think more of spiritual and metaphysical rather than specifically about science and this cuts across everyone from the educated to the illiterate”
