Authorities from Australia and Canada have issued travel recommendations for Nigeria, alerting their nationals to a potential terrorist strike in Abuja.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the warning comes 72 hours after the US and UK said that terrorists were preparing an attack in the capital of Nigeria.

In a statement released on Sunday, the US Embassy said it will provide less services until further notice and asked Americans to forgo unnecessary travel.

The message also mentioned additional potential targets for the terrorists, such as government buildings, houses of worship, schools, marketplaces, retail centers, hotels, bars, restaurants, sporting events, transportation hubs, and offices of international organizations.

Additionally, the United Kingdom urged its residents in Nigeria to exercise caution and maintain vigilance in a statement released on Sunday by its embassy in Abuja.

In order to avoid becoming a target of a terrorist attack, the British government also asked its residents to pay attention to local news and security officials’ recommendations.

The Australian government urged its nationals to think twice before going to Nigeria in an alert released on Wednesday.

The country added that travelers to Nigeria run the risk of terrorist attacks, kidnappings, violent civil upheaval, and crime. It named Abuja and the surrounding areas as areas with potential high threats of terrorist attack and abduction.

It said: “The potential for terrorism, kidnapping, crime and civil unrest remains high throughout Nigeria. If, despite our advice, you undertake travel within Nigeria, research routes and get professional security advice and support before departing.”

In its advisory, Canada warned its citizens to avoid non-essential trips to Nigeria, “including in Abuja, due to the unpredictable security situation throughout the country and the significant risk of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks and kidnappings”.
