The need for a national carrier has been characterised as moribund and a drain pipe by Allen Onyeama, the CEO of Air Peace.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, Nigeria introduced Nigeria Air as a national carrier a few months ago.
However, the project was put on hold by President Bola Tinubu’s administration roughly two months after he assumed office.
Onyeama added her voice to the rising chorus of critics of the national carrier initiative, stating that the challenges facing the nation’s businesses exclude the need for such a project.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the CEO of Air Peace stated, “The national carrier thing implies government ownership.” It is not the government’s place to manage commercial aviation operations. The national carrier concept is obsolete, having been abandoned by nations several decades ago.
He asserts that a number of airlines operating under national designations are merely “flag carriers,” not national airlines as some may believe.
“In the olden days, they used to be [owned by governments] but they are all divested. They are all flag carriers.
“Why is my country going backward? In 2023, talking about national carrier?” Onyeama added.
He believes the few African countries with national carriers are those “that cannot afford business entrepreneurs with the right funding”.
