CSO Assigns FG To Care For Orphaned Children

The Maple Leaf Early Years Foundation, a civil society group, has given the federal government the responsibility of helping and caring for orphanages and orphaned children in the community.

The organisation made the request at their Global Orphans Party on Thursday to honour the Eid-el-Fitr celebration for the orphaned children. The event was hosted at the MLEYF office in Gwarimpa, Abuja, in partnership with the Life for Relief and Development.

Programmes Coordinator of the MLEYF, who is also the Team Lead, Life for Relief and Development, for the Global Orphans Party Nigeria 2023 event, Dorcas Madumeye, said the intervention of the government would be a “good idea”, noting that some of the orphanages struggle to cater to the children.

“It will be nice to have the government get involved to help the orphanages, because they also need this help,” Madumeye appealed.

She added, “The help should not be for just people on the streets, these children do not have mothers, they do not have fathers, and I know how difficult it is for the founders or the managers to take care of them. I have been to their orphanages, and I’ve seen that some babies sleep on the floor. They don’t have baby beds.

“Like it is kind of jampacked, it is not easy. So, if the government can help, it will be a good idea for them,” she said.

Madumeye also called on other groups and non-governmental organisations to emulate the MLEYF and reach out to the orphanages, which she noted were often neglected in humanitarian activities.
“Just as we have done for these orphans, I would want other organisations to emulate us, to also reach out to orphanages. Anybody that’s having parties in mind or giving out, should just think of orphans because sometimes, they don’t even reach out to them, especially orphanages in rural areas,” the MLEYF Lead pleaded.

She continued, “People should try to reach out to orphanages and when they are having something for humanity, they should remember orphans, because these children need help as well”.

One of the children, Ada Grace, appreciated the organisers of the party, while also calling on the government to regard them as their own children.

“I wish that the government will take them as their own children and help them in their academics”, she said.
