On Tuesday, the Delta State High Court in Asaba sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force to death for the murder of Onyeka Ibeh, a well-known phone dealer in Asaba. Presided over by Justice C. D Diai, the court found Ebri guilty of killing Ibeh in an incident that took place on April 5, 2023.
The incident occurred when Ibeh and his wife were driving from Ugbolu to Asaba and were stopped by a police team for a search. After waiting for a prolonged period without being attended to, the couple decided to drive on. Angered by their decision, Inspector Ebri fired into the vehicle, fatally hitting Ibeh in the head. Ibeh’s wife, who was in the front seat, was unharmed.
This incident sparked widespread protests by youths in Asaba, who marched through the streets and to police headquarters demanding justice for Ibeh.
Following the verdict, E.H Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice and part of the prosecution team, described the judgment as a landmark decision that served justice to both the deceased and society. Ifeanyi Ibeh, the older brother of the deceased, also expressed his gratitude, commending the court for delivering justice to his family.
