Organised labour members have encouraged Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consult with them and the members of the Organised Private Sector prior to presenting any figures about the minimum wage bill to the National Assembly.
The federal government led by Tinubu was also warned by labour groups that regardless of how long it takes to enact the new minimum wage, workers across will demand the payment of arrears.
On the fringes of the ongoing International Labour Conference at the Palais du Nation in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), revealed this to reporters.
UPDATE: NLC Slams SGF Over Comment On New Minimum Wage
Remember that the previous national minimum wage law was signed into law by the President of the immediate past, Muhammadu Buhari, on April 17, 2019, and it ended on April 18, 2024, having served its five-year term.
Ajaero stressed during his remarks at the joint briefing the significance of holding employers accountable for unpaid minimum wage arrears regardless of when the National Assembly passes new minimum wage legislation. He said that before deciding on a final amount, labour anticipates that Tinubu will call a meeting with the tripartite bodies to discuss the ability to pay.
Ajaero stated, “We do not expect the President to present a final figure to the National Assembly without consulting with organised labour, employers, and state governors. Everyone will still come together to discuss before transmission to the National Assembly.”
When Ajaero stated that labour would continue to advocate and push for more in order to secure the highest feasible figure for Nigerian workers, even after it was forwarded to the National Assembly, the TUC President reiterated his comments.

The leaders of the two labour centres asserted that they had not signed any reports and denied knowledge of the reports’ contents when questioned about the precise amount mentioned in the report that was given to the President.
“Moreover, we have not seen the content of what has been submitted to Tinubu. We will insist on seeing the content and appending our signatures to every page. We will not append our signatures to any page we are not comfortable with,” they stated.
