Bail has been denied to Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, by the Abuja Federal High Court.
In accordance with section 161(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Justice Emeka Nwite said in his decision that the court had the authority to determine Kyari’s bail.
According to the judge, Kyari had not provided enough proof for the court to grant him bail.
The judge had granted the former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) a two-week temporary bail on May 22nd so that he could bury his mother.

But after Mr. Kyari requested an extension of the bail, the two weeks were extended by one week.
Kyari met all bail requirements on June 1 and was granted parole that same day.
During today’s hearings, Justice Emeka Nwite authorised an accelerated hearing in the case but declined to extend his previous order.
After being taken into custody by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on February 14, 2022, Kyari was suspected of having ties to a global drug cartel.
On March 7, 2022, he was arraigned alongside Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu, the other four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team.

Charges were also brought against Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, two suspected drug traffickers who were apprehended at Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
Umeibe and Ezenwanne entered guilty pleas and were found guilty, whilst Kyari and the IRT members entered not guilty pleas.
