The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has addressed concerns surrounding the recent appointment of Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as Commissioner for Health-designate. In an interview with Channels Television, Idahosa clarified that the decision was based purely on merit, countering allegations of nepotism and undue influence.
Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former Edo State Governor and current Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, was named Commissioner for Health-designate last Tuesday by Governor Monday Okpebholo. The announcement, made through a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, sparked discussions about the implications of such an appointment.
Idahosa praised Cyril as a seasoned medical professional, emphasizing his qualifications. “Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor who completed his studies in Nigeria and furthered his education in the United States. His appointment is based on competence and his ability to serve effectively, not his lineage,” he said.
He also revealed that Adams Oshiomhole opposed his son’s nomination, underscoring the independent nature of the decision. “Senator Oshiomhole was against the nomination. This appointment was not about him; it was about the governor’s vision for the state and Cyril’s qualifications to contribute meaningfully,” Idahosa explained.
Refuting claims of nepotism and comparisons to state capture—a term highlighted in past political discourse by former President Olusegun Obasanjo—Idahosa argued that the appointment reflects the administration’s commitment to excellence. “This is not state capture. It is about ensuring that qualified individuals deliver results for Edo State,” he stated.
On his role as deputy governor, Idahosa provided clarity, noting that while he collaborates with Governor Okpebholo on cabinet matters, his main statutory responsibility is chairing the Edo State Boundary Commission. This critical role involves overseeing the resolution of boundary disputes and promoting harmonious relationships among communities.
