The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims that its X account (formerly Twitter) was hacked by suspected internet fraudsters. Speculation had arisen after reports suggested that fraudsters, who allegedly threatened to launch a cyber attack against the anti-graft agency, had compromised the EFCC’s account.
The rumors stemmed from accusations made by certain internet fraudsters who claimed that the EFCC was overstepping constitutional boundaries in its crackdown on online criminal activities involving Nigerians. On Thursday morning, checks on the EFCC’s X account revealed that it was unavailable, fueling further speculation.
However, the EFCC’s official website and other social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, remained operational.
In response to the concerns, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified in an interview that the account had not been hacked. He explained that the temporary unavailability of the X account was due to an ongoing update of the agency’s records. Oyewale assured the public that the account would be accessible again soon, stating, “We are updating our records on the account. It was not hacked. It will soon start running.”
