The Delta State Obidient Elders’ Council has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the ongoing hunger and economic hardship crises in Nigeria. In a statement released on Tuesday in Asaba, the state capital, the council expressed its support for the nationwide hunger protests, which began on August 1, 2024, under the banner #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria. The protests aim to pressure the Tinubu administration to take decisive action on issues such as hunger, economic difficulties, and the high cost of governance.
The statement, signed by the council’s Chairman, Chris Biose, and Secretary, Solomon Akeni, criticized President Tinubu for his inaction and urged him to focus on the real issues affecting the Nigerian populace. The council pointed out that the widespread participation of youths in the protests, despite attempts by traditional and religious leaders to dissuade them, highlights a growing disconnect between these institutions and the younger generation.
The council also condemned the violent turn of some protests, which led to looting and destruction of property in certain areas. They argued that these incidents stem from the political culture and social practices that the Federal Government has failed to address, referencing a complaint by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, about the involvement of underage protesters in Maiduguri.
Furthermore, the council expressed disappointment in President Tinubu’s silence on critical issues, such as the ongoing killings of crop farmers by armed Fulani herdsmen, which they identified as a key factor in the country’s food shortage. They also criticized the president for not addressing the rampant oil theft that is damaging the economy, and for failing to investigate the brutal killings of citizens by police forces.
The Delta Obidient Elders’ Council concluded by urging President Tinubu to take immediate and effective action to address these pressing issues, which they believe are essential for creating a more just and livable Nigeria.
