Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have voiced their frustration following a series of national grid collapses, with the latest incident occurring on Monday, leaving much of the country in darkness. This marks the sixth grid collapse in 2024, with power only being restored to certain areas on Tuesday.
Residents of Kubwa, Lugbe, Kuje, and neighboring communities are calling on the Federal Government to address the ongoing issue. Many describe the frequent collapses as embarrassing and damaging to Nigeria’s image.
Mrs. Eniola Oluseyi, a Kubwa resident, expressed disappointment, saying, “Every time we experience a blackout or grid collapse, it’s an embarrassment. The government should find a solution to prevent future occurrences.”
Similarly, Mr. Chibuzor Okoye of Lugbe lamented the recurring grid failures, stating that repeated collapses tarnish the country’s reputation. He urged the government to implement necessary measures to stop the trend.
Mrs. Priscilla Akpan, another Lugbe resident, noted that despite significant financial investments in the power sector, the grid continues to collapse frequently. “It’s unacceptable for the grid to fail so often when so much money is spent, yet there’s no improvement,” she said.
Mr. Usman Aliyu, a resident of Kuje, echoed this sentiment, urging authorities to investigate the root cause of the problem. He argued that given the substantial funds allocated to the power sector, such collapses should not occur.
In response, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the grid collapse occurred at 6:58 p.m. on Monday. However, no specific reasons were provided. The company assured customers that it was working with relevant stakeholders to restore power once the grid stabilizes.
