The Nigerian government has denied reports that Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu was given a new minimum wage proposal of N105,000. The proposal was made by Minister of Finance Wale Edun.
In a brief statement, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, denied the claims’ veracity.
“The Honorable Minister of Finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun has not proposed N105,000 minimum wage. The contrary story being disseminated is false,” Onanuga asserted.
UPDATE: Edun Proposes N105,000 as New Minimum Wage To Tinubu
This rejection comes after earlier rumours that suggested Edun had proposed raising the minimum wage to N105, 000 a month.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) called off their strikes in response to the government’s unwillingness to raise the minimum wage to N494,000, which gave rise to the issue.
After the administration promised to negotiate a new minimum wage within a week, the strike was called off.
In accordance with the terms of the government’s agreement with the labour unions, Tinubu had given Edun till Wednesday to propose a model for the new minimum wage.
