The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) staged a protest on Tuesday against the Federal Government’s non-payment of salary arrears. The protest occurred in front of the university’s main entrance along the Akure-Ilesa expressway, where members of the union chanted solidarity songs and held placards with messages such as, “Save our souls from cabal in the Presidency, pay our salaries,” “Mr. President direct Accountant-General of the Federation to pay our salaries,” and “Government insensitivity to workers’ plight is an act of irresponsibility.”
The non-teaching staff at FUTA are demanding the release of their four months’ salaries withheld by the Federal Government since 2022. Felix Adubi, chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council of FUTA, stated that the unions could no longer ensure industrial harmony in Nigerian universities. He highlighted that only one out of the four unions that went on strike in 2022 had been paid.

Adubi emphasized that the union would persist with the protests until their demands were met. He criticized the government’s divide-and-rule approach and urged the President to fulfill his promises. “We are pleading with Mr. President to do what is needed before the final straw. Mr. President has promised there will be no crisis in Nigerian universities. We can no longer guarantee industrial harmony if Mr. President fails to do the needful,” Adubi said.
