Lagos State has been severely impacted by extensive flooding following days of relentless heavy rainfall. The prolonged downpour on Wednesday led to significant flooding in numerous areas, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ketu, Oworonshoki, Oshodi, Epe, Sangotedo, and Awoyaya.
Many residents blame the flooding on blocked waterways, a consequence of indiscriminate waste disposal. Mr. Rasheed Ayobami from the Labora area shared that his home was submerged due to the absence of a functional drainage system. “There is too much water flowing into my compound; the entire house is submerged. I live in a new site where there is no drainage, which makes the water run into residential homes, rendering us homeless because we can’t sleep inside the water,” he lamented.
Similarly, Seyi Arowosaye criticized the persistent flooding on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, attributing it to clogged drains. He urged the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to clear the drainage systems and called on residents to stop dumping waste in them. Additionally, he appealed to the Lagos State Government to expedite road repairs in the Sangotedo area.
Mrs. Bola Fadugba expressed her frustration with the flooding in Labora, stating, “I live in Labora, but during the rainy season, I relocate with my family to my younger sister’s house in the Eputu area. Flood has taken over my house due to lack of drainage in the environment. So many areas in the metropolis are also affected by flooding; the government should find a lasting solution to this perennial flooding challenge.”
Residents in the Okota area also faced severe flooding, spending the morning bailing water out of their homes. Motorists experienced significant delays, particularly on routes from Alapere to the Third Mainland Bridge. The Iyana-Oworo-Olopomeji area was heavily flooded, causing traffic to extend to Alapere. Additionally, a fallen tree around the Airport U-turn in Oshodi further compounded the situation.
Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) were actively clearing the fallen tree to facilitate traffic flow and ensure public safety.
