The Nigerian House of Representatives, on Thursday, moved forward with the second reading of a bill proposing the creation of a new state in the South-South region, to be named Ogoja State. The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to carve out the new state from Cross River.
Sponsored by Hon. Godwin Offiono and three other lawmakers, the proposal aims to restructure the South-South geopolitical zone by adding Ogoja State. During the session, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas conducted a voice vote, and the majority of lawmakers supported the bill’s progress.
The presiding officer has now referred the bill to the committee on constitutional review for further examination and deliberation. If successful, this could lead to the creation of Nigeria’s newest state, further reshaping the nation’s political landscape.
