Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president in 2023, has stated that he will not be stepping down from partisan politics just yet.
But he made a suggestion that it was time for him to stop running for public office and let the younger people take up the mantle.
The former vice president revealed the hint on Monday during a press conference where he addressed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Bola Tinubu’s victory over the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate on February 25, 2023.
There are doubts regarding the PDP leader running in the 2027 elections—by which time he would be 81 years old—after the Supreme Court rejected the appeal that Atiku and the PDP had filed on Thursday, October 26, on the grounds that it lacked substance.
During his speech on Monday, Atiku stated that although the fight to strengthen Nigeria’s political institutions and democracy will not end, the younger generation will now spearhead this effort.
He said: “As for me and my party this phase of our work is done. However, I am not going away. For as long as I breathe I will continue to struggle, with other Nigerians, to deepen our democracy and rule of law and for the kind of political and economic restructuring the country needs to reach its true potential. That struggle should now be led by the younger generation of Nigerians who have even more at stake than my generation.”
