Nigerian lawmaker and House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized after a viral video showed him assaulting an uber driver. The incident, which took place at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, involved the lawmaker repeatedly slapping and verbally abusing the driver, identified as Abuwatseya. The driver had been delivering a package of snails to Ikwechegh and allegedly requested that the lawmaker retrieve the package himself. The video captured Ikwechegh’s outburst, which included threats to “make the driver disappear” without any consequences.
On Monday, Ikwechegh issued a formal apology, acknowledging that his actions were unbefitting of a public servant. “As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry,” he stated. He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment his actions had caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public.
Ikwechegh pledged full cooperation with the Nigerian Police in their ongoing investigation, affirming his commitment to justice. He expressed appreciation for the prompt condemnation of his actions by both his political party and the Nigerian Police, stating that this collective response reflected a shared commitment to the rule of law and citizens’ rights.
The lawmaker shared plans to seek professional counseling to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also committed to engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect and empathy, hoping to encourage a culture of understanding among Nigerians. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” Ikwechegh said.
The viral video has drawn widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment in Ikwechegh’s behavior. Following the incident, the police summoned him to the Maitama Divisional Headquarters for questioning. The police force also criticized him for allegedly using the name of Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun in an attempt to intimidate the driver, further underscoring the need for accountability among public officials.
In closing, Ikwechegh called on Nigerians to join him in promoting a culture of respect and tolerance. While the public remains divided on whether his apology will suffice, many view his pledges of reform and accountability as a step toward positive change.
