Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has called on the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to reconsider its strike, warning that the work stoppage could jeopardize healthcare access for Kano’s over 20 million residents. This appeal follows an ultimatum from the NMA demanding the dismissal of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who allegedly assaulted a female doctor at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.
Governor Yusuf assured the NMA that the findings of the investigative committee regarding the incident are already on his desk and will be addressed promptly. He encouraged the association to allow due process, pointing out that this incident involves a “dispute between two adults” and should not disrupt critical medical services across the state.
In a joint live broadcast with radio journalists, Yusuf expressed his disappointment with the NMA’s decision to proceed with the strike, recalling the cooperative relationship between the association and the state government in the past. “There have been many instances where the NMA postponed planned strikes due to the mutual respect and good relationship between us,” he noted, highlighting his administration’s dedication to supporting healthcare workers.
Yusuf explained that he acted quickly upon learning of the incident, establishing a committee to investigate and instructing it to report within 48 hours. “The report is now on my table, and I am ready to act on it immediately,” he affirmed.
Emphasizing the potential risks to vulnerable patients, including pregnant women awaiting delivery, the governor apologized on behalf of the government and urged the doctors to consider public health impacts before taking further action. He assured that if the investigation reveals misconduct by any official, appropriate sanctions will be enforced, underscoring his administration’s commitment to accountability.
