Telecom giant MTN has shuttered all its stores and service centers across Nigeria. This drastic action follows a significant uproar from subscribers after the network provider barred their lines on Sunday.
On Monday, a viral video on social media showed a mob tearing down a barricade fence outside an MTN office. The clip captured a large group of angry subscribers vandalizing the telecommunications company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State. The subscribers’ frustration stemmed from their lines being blocked due to mismatches between their National Identification Numbers (NIN) and SIM registrations.
In response to the circulated video, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stated on X.com that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order at the scene. “This should not be the way to go,” Hundeyin remarked.
Reacting to the situation, MTN announced on Tuesday that it would be closing all its shops nationwide. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the statement on X read.
Further details are expected to follow as the situation develops.
