The Muslim Rights Concern Group, or MURIC, has fiercely opposed the current inquiry into the financial dealings of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, on the grounds that he embezzled N423 billion in public monies while in office.
The former governor and a few of his appointees were accused of embezzling the aforementioned funds by an ad hoc committee that was formed by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to investigate the finances, loans, and contracts given during El-Rufai’s administration. The committee’s report was submitted after that.
MURIC released a statement on Thursday expressing their displeasure with the investigation, calling the action “ill-advised” and raising possible hidden agendas.
Kaduna Assembly Seeks El-Rufai Probe Over Alleged N423bn Fraud
The organisation made it clear that individuals pushing for the probe had political motivations rather than seeking justice for cash that had been stolen. They wanted to damage El-Rufai’s reputation by fabricating allegations and manipulating data.
“The special committee’s recommendation to probe the former governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, is a misguided action,” stated the group in their statement, casting doubt on the legitimacy and intentions of the investigative process.
“MURIC received the news with a pinch of salt. There can be no clean motive behind the attempt. Those who want to probe El-Rufai are not looking for stolen money.
It is a political retaliation. They intend to damage Mallam’s reputation by employing fabrications, deceit, and contrived statistics as their tools. It’s ridiculous, ludicrous, and savoury. It is a foolish action.
Group Criticises El-Rufai For Remarks On Peter Obi
“The current administration in Kaduna will do well to concentrate on building on the enviable achievements of the former governor instead of digging pits for his predecessor.
“Introducing politics of bitterness to Kaduna State is alien to the political culture and tradition laid down by the great Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto.”
“Any attempt to de-market El-Rufai today is an attempt at undermining the possibility of a continued handshake across the Niger which was characterized by the North-South-West alliance in the February 2023 election.
“El-Rufai’s role in making the alliance a fait accompli gave Kaduna State special prominence. Therefore, only those who do not wish Kaduna State and, by extension, the North, well can promote the idea of probing El-Rufai.”

“Any attempt by Kaduna lawmakers to shake the status quo is politically naïve, myopic and kindergarten. Kaduna politicians should stop searching for a needle in a whole collection of haystacks.”
